Two drivers killed in separate accidents Monday

The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated separate fatality accidents on Monday in Allen County.

The first accident occurred at 4:38 a.m. Monday on 800th Road eighth-tenths of a mile north of Delaware and a mile west of Humboldt, according to the KHP.

In this accident, a 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by Eric L. Guenther, 57, of Humboldt was northbound on 800th Road and a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Steven Yost, 53, of Humboldt was southbound. Guenther’s pickup went into a spin and struck Yost’s pickup head-on. Yost’s pickup caught fire after the collision, the KHP report said.

Guenther was taken to Allen County Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Yost was taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute with suspected serious injuries, the KHP report said.

Both drivers wore seat belts.

The second accident happened at 7:51 p.m. Monday on U.S. 169 five miles south of U.S. 54.

A 2006 Toyota pickup driven by Melany J. Felt, 54, of Blue Mound was southbound on the highway and crossed the center yellow line and entered the northbound lane, the KHP report said. A 2024 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer driven by Christopher L. Keathley, 53, of Parsons was northbound and steered to the right shoulder to avoid the pickup. The pickup struck the semi on the right shoulder.

Felt was pronounced dead at the scene. Keathley was possibly injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the report said.
