The Leamona FCE unit met Nov. 14 with six members in attendance.
The first lesson, “Managing the Strain of Stress,” was presented by Edie Godinez. Unit members learned about positive and negative stress. Eustress or positive stress is when you are doing a pleasant activity and making stress perform the necessary duties. Distress is what most people feel when daily life is not happy, healthy, or relationships are not working and they are the hardest to find peace. Edie showed some breathing exercises to help to relax and talked about physical, emotional and behavior/social stress. She gave everyone a box of teas and honey as tea can help you relax.
The second lesson was presented by Janis Reinhardt on lavender. Unit members learned that Kansas is a good climate for growing lavender as it is a zone 5-7. Lavender also has English and French varieties. English grows best in zone 5 from April to June. French grows best in zone 7-9, is larger and the aroma is sweet with a camphorwood scent. She showed many items with lavender scent. Some were slippers with lavender in the sole, stuffed animals to heat in the microwave, several varieties of room deodorants and sachets for placing in your dresser drawers.
Lavender is good for insomnia, anxiety, headaches, chemotherapy side effects, acne and skin conditions. Lavender tea is also relaxing.
Reinhardt, president, conducted the business meeting and asked members to fill out reports of the lessons they had presented and how many people they reached. She will compile these and send them to the state. Unit members also agreed to cancel the December meeting. The January meeting will be at Kay’s.
