Douglas Eugene Fickel, 72, a cherished father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
He was born on July 30, 1952, in Chanute to Leo and Beth (Nichols) Fickel. Doug grew up on the family’s dairy farm near Urbana. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1970.
Doug married Marcia Heaton on Aug. 5, 1972, in Chanute. They later divorced but remained close and supportive.
Doug enjoyed a distinguished career as a master plumber for over 49 years, a profession that he excelled at, and shared his knowledge and expertise as a plumbing instructor at Neosho County Community College.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Doug was known for his diverse interests and hobbies. He had a deep affection for Mopar antique cars. His love for antiquities was further reflected in his extensive collection of antique clocks and marbles. Doug also enjoyed the thrill of riding his Harley, as well as spending tranquil moments in nature fishing and hunting whenever he had the opportunity on the family farm, where he grew up. The farm held a special place in his heart, and it was a place that he created memories with his loved ones. His hard work and determination in preserving the farm was recognized in 2007 by receiving the Wildlife Conservation Award. He returned to the family farm in 2013 to enjoy the familiar surroundings for the remainder of his days.
He is survived by his brother, Roger (LaVeta) Fickel of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; his partner, Deb Zimmerman-Jones; his three children, Sara Larkin of Chanute, Kirk (Jaime) Fickel of Chanute and Marcetta (Nick) Shue of Stark; his grandchildren, Emily (Larkin) Hamrick, Logan Fickel, Mitchell Larkin and Melanie Shue; his great-grandchildren, Everly Hamrick and Declan Hamrick; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and a loving extended family.
