The 72nd annual state conference for the Family Community Education members of Kansas took place Oct. 7-9 at Central Park Pavilion and Holiday Inn Express in Chanute. The theme was the incredible journey of FCE celebrating 110 years.
Monday, Oct. 7, began with an informative historical bus tour of Humboldt and a program that evening by Jackie Borgenson, giving an overview of the travels of Martin and Osa Johnson.
On Oct. 8, morning tours were available to the Safari Museum and Chanute Library, Chanute Historical Museum, Chanute Art Gallery, Howard’s Toys for Big Boys Car Museum and Cardinal Drug. Special music following lunch was provided by the Royster Junior High Choir under the direction of Lance Burnett.
A special American flag historical presentation, prepared by Donna Stricklin of Parsons, preceded the KAFCE annual meeting Oct. 8, including the election of officers. Officers elected were: President-elect, Faye Spencer of Salina; first vice president, DeLores Walden, Berryton; and treasurer Marci Price of Ensign. Officers serve on a rotation basis for two-year terms so not all officers were up for election.
State awards for program accomplishments by individuals, individual FCE Units and Counties followed the main speaker.
On Oct. 9, morning programs included a presentation on “Living Life To The Fullest: Keys to Embracing Aging” by Tara Solomon-Smith, agent for K-State Research and Extension and Southwind District, chair yoga and self-care and relaxation by SEK Mental Health Staff.
Following lunch a special presentation on the 110 year history of the FCE program was given by Judy Fullmer, national FCE president, who happens to be from Northwest Kansas. Her presentation was followed by the installation of officers for 2025. Nancy Kernick of Chanute, outgoing KAFCE president, was recognized and presented a floral bouquet and gift by the Neosho County FCE Council. Kernick served as president from 2019 through 2024.
The state KAFCE conference was planned and hosted by FCE members from Crawford, Bourbon, Allen, Neosho, Labette and Montgomery counties.
Special thanks for the support provided by NCCC, city of Chanute and businesses in the six-county area.
