PITTSBURG — Earning runner-up at the SEK League Girls Tennis Championships on Saturday, the Chanute Blue Comets took the first step of a potentially deep postseason run.
“This was a great day for us,” Chanute head coach Michael DeLaTorre said. “The best thing is that all six of the ladies earned points to get us that finish. Both of our singles players continue to roll and play great tennis.”
Independence won the title as a team, scoring 50 points. Chanute was runner-up with 37 points, followed by Fort Scott (35), Parsons (27), Labette County (20), Pittsburg (10) and Coffeyville (5).
Ella Guernsey took third place in singles, going 3-1 on the day. Leah Burnett was fifth in singles, also going 3-1.
“Ella was seeded third in the tournament, and Leah was seeded fifth, which is exactly where they each finished,” DeLaTorre said. “Both players played great tennis, hitting great shots, and making good shot placement decisions. Even in the matches they lost, they battled hard and never gave up.”
In doubles, Rylee Smith and Jacqueline Smoot took third with a 3-1 mark. Ashtyn Cummings and Kanika Marcoux claimed eighth with a 1-3 record.
“I’m very proud of these ladies and the effort they gave in this tournament,” DeLaTorre said.
