Dancing for a Cause Highlights from Osa’s Prom Gala

The annual “Osa’s Prom” gala, held at Chanute’s Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum, was a vibrant celebration that brought together approximately 150 supporters of the museum. An enduring tradition since 2004, the gala was inspired by a desire to engage the community while raising funds to support the museum’s operations and special exhibits. The event has its roots in the 1970s when it began as a birthday celebration for Belle Leighty, Osa’s mother, evolving into the beloved gala format we see today.

This year’s gala was graced by notable attendees, including Mike and CeCe Mitchell, who added a touch of excitement to the evening. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, thanks in large part to the live band, K-Audic from Kansas City, which had guests dancing the night away. The evening was further enhanced by the talented Neosho County Community College Cheer Team, who took charge of decorations and serving, creating an inviting and festive environment complete with colorful balloons and creative photo stations that perfectly captured the “Prom” theme.

A highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Prom royalty, with museum trustee Samantha Gastineau named Queen and museum director Conrad Froehlich as King, a delightful surprise for Froehlich who felt greatly humbled by the honor. The gala also featured a live auction conducted by Dave Petersen, which contributed significantly to the fundraising efforts. All funds raised during the evening are earmarked for the museum’s general operations, ensuring it remains open and vibrant throughout the year. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, the costs of hosting the gala were fully covered, allowing all proceeds from ticket sales, auctions, and other activities to directly benefit the Safari Museum. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many compliments directed toward the planning and execution of the event. The Foundation board will use these insights to enhance future galas. Excitingly, preparations are already underway for the 2025 Gala, promising another fabulous evening for the community to look forward to.

“Osa’s Prom” serves not only as a fundraiser but as a celebration of the community’s identity, enhancing the cultural landscape of Chanute. Events like this play a crucial role in attracting and retaining businesses and skilled employees, making Chanute a vibrant place to live and work.
