On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, the Chanute Area Retired School Personnel convened for their monthly meeting in the Cleaver Dining Room of the NCCC Student Union. The 1:00 p.m. gathering began with greetings from Anita DeLaTorre and Bob Cross. President Nancy Brooks led the meeting and introduced guest speaker Matt Koester, Superintendent of Schools for Chanute USD 413. Mr. Koester shared his background and journey to becoming Superintendent, offering insight into his role and experiences in education. After his remarks, the business portion of the meeting commenced. The minutes from the previous general meeting, along with the Treasurer’s report, had been emailed in advance. A motion was made and seconded to accept the reports, and the motion carried.
During the old business discussion, Nancy Brooks reminded members to pay their dues if they hadn’t already done so. Under new business, the Executive Board proposed raising the scholarship donation in memory of deceased members from $15.00 to $20.00. A motion was made, seconded, and passed unanimously. The meeting moved on to reports from various committees: District 6 Director/Membership: Although Jane Martin was absent, it was recommended by the Executive Board to apply for a $100.00 grant from the state to support membership efforts.
Community Service: Anita DeLaTorre, Dorie Slane, and Mary Dawson discussed ongoing initiatives. Anita requested lip balm or funds to purchase lip balm for Cherry Street. Dorie continues to collect Best Choice labels, and Mary is gathering G&W receipts.
Recycling: Members were reminded that the next recycling event will take place on October 9 at 9:00 a.m. at Santa Fe Park.
Courtesy & Welfare: Patsy Krokstrom was not present, but Nancy Brooks reported on her behalf. Three birthday cards and one get well card had been sent since the last meeting.
Health: Elinor Whaley reminded members that it is time to receive their vaccinations. A drive-through shot clinic is scheduled for October 10.
Legislature: Mike Bruner encouraged members to be mindful of their choices during the upcoming elections and to vote for legislators who support their interests. The next meeting will take place the day after the election.
Scholarship: Dan Slane reported receiving a thankyou note from the current scholarship recipient.
Memorial Service: Jean Bearrick announced plans to hold a memorial service for Ellery Robertson at an upcoming meeting.
Nancy Brooks concluded the meeting with several important reminders, including the date for Lobby Day at the Capitol on February 12, 2025, encouraging all members to attend. Additionally, a motion was passed to purchase a portable PA system for future meetings. She also read a thank-you note from the Humboldt Ministerial Alliance for a recent donation. With no further business to address, the meeting adjourned. The next general meeting is scheduled for November 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the Cleaver Dining Room at NCCC.
