Humboldt volleyball wins Burlington Tournament

BURLINGTON — Besting the field at the Burlington Tournament, the Humboldt Cubs won first place as it remains hot midway through the volleyball campaign.

The Cubs went 2-1 in pool play to earn a ticket to the bracket.

Humboldt opened with a 2-0 (2510, 25-19) win over McLouth. Shelby Shaughnessy led the Cubs with six kills while Ricklyn Hillmon added five. Lakyn Meadows had 14 assists while Skylar Hottenstein had 23 digs.

Humboldt then lost to Burlington in three sets, 2-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-18). Hillmon and Shaughnessy each led Humboldt with seven kills apiece while Laney Hull added five. Meadows tallied 17 assists while Hottenstein had 16 digs.

The Cubs then secured a bracket berth with a 2-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-18) victory over the Baxter Springs Lions.

Hillmon racked up 13 kills while Hull added 10. Meadows amassed 26 assists with Hottenstein notching 25 digs.

In the semifinals, Humboldt beat Fredonia, 2-0 (25-20, 25-18).

Shaughnessy led the Cubs with 13 kills while Hillmon added eight. Meadows had 25 assists while Hottenstein had 20 digs.

In the championship match, Humboldt took down the Iola Mustangs, 2-0 (25-19, 25-13).

Shaughnessy paced Humboldt with seven kills while Hull added six and Hillmon had five. Meadows had 18 assists and Hottenstein had eight digs.

Saturday’s championship was a midseason punctuation for a club that’s shifted trajectories. After the Cubs started the season 0-5, Humboldt’s record has improved to 15-9 overall.
