Humboldt hosts race

HUMBOLDT — Hosting the 2024 iteration of the Humboldt Invitational, the Humboldt Cubs had 11 varsity runners race on Tuesday.

In the girls’ 5K race, Frontenac’s Cera Schenk won the race with a time of 22:03, beating runner-up Annabelle Compton of Independence by a full minute.

Humboldt’s Anna Heisler placed fifth with a time of 23:34 while Tori Melendez was right behind her in sixth, just two seconds behind Heisler.

Teghen Jaro placed 14th for the Cubs with a time of 24:44. Jo Ellison finished 17th (26:13), Josey Ellis 18th (26:21), Mallory Sinclair 19th (26:21) and Sophia Barlow 20th (26:24).

Frontenac won the girls race as a team with 27 points. Humboldt was second with 43 points, while Caney Valley was third with 56.

In the boys’ 5K, Caney Valley claimed the top three individual spots with Simeon Sanchez winning the race, posting a mark of 16:23.

Humboldt’s Thatcher Mueller finished 36th (21:44), Colden Cook 37th (22:29), Jack Works 38th (22:32) and Emmitt Carson 44th (26:46).

Caney Valley won the team standings in the boys race with 27 points. Pittsburg was runner-up with 52, followed by Coffeyville (84), Columbus (101), Frontenac (106) and Neodesha (131).
