CHANUTE — Grabbing a pair of wins in a home SEK League quad, the Chanute Blue Comets swept Pittsburg and Labette County on Tuesday. The pair of wins keep Chanute undefeated in league play.
“We’ve been working on thinking about where we’re putting the ball down,” Chanute head coach Jory Murry said. “Our girls are starting to become aware of that and we did a great job of that tonight. We’re not just giving teams tips or swings at a defender.”
Labette County went 0-2 on the day, losing to Independence as well as the hosts.
Stats for either team were not available at press time.
Chanute takes down Pittsburg
It took an extra point in the second set as Chanute beat Pittsburg, 2-0 (25-16, 26-24) in the Blue Comets’ first match of the night.
“We played them a couple weeks ago and they beat us, so we changed up our defense to put a single block in the middle because they killed us with tips,” Murry said. “That was a lot more successful for us. We didn’t have to read the hand as much. We were ready to play and that was beneficial for us.”

Wrapping the night in dominant
fashion, Chanute extinguished Labette County, 2-0 (2511, 25-13).
“Our girls are athletes that are smart and coachable,” Murry said. “We put all of that together against Labette County. We mixed it up at the net. It was a combo of strength and smarts they used to their advantage.”
Labette County struggled to mount resistance at the net as the Blue Comets’ hitters frequently found powerful swings.
“We did a lot of scouting on Chanute and we knew, going in, what they have,” Phillips said. “We don’t have a lot of height in the middle. We’re super inexperienced there. And tracking the ball and getting blocks closed, we’re struggling. It makes it a lot tougher.”
The pair of wins moved Chanute’s record to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in SEK League play.
“Our goal every year is to win the league,” Murry said. “We’ll finish the first half of league play strong and get ready for Round 2. I have such a good group of girls. We’ve had a lot of comebacks this year. They’re mentally tough and a great group to work with.”
