Extending their winning streak to three games, the Chanute Blue Comets beat the Labette County Grizzlies on Monday, 8-6, and the Parsons Vikings on Tuesday, 12-0, in SEK League softball action.
In Monday’s win, the Blue Comets scored five runs in the final two innings to overcome a 6-3 deficit.
Avery Dean earned the win in the circle, throwing 4.1 frames with four strikeouts. Ava Teichgraeber and Emily Cunningham also made appearances.
“We had the ability to rotate pitchers and find the right moment,” Chanute head coach Mary Reilly said. “We didn’t let anybody face one-too-many batters. They stepped up when they needed to and got outs. It was a hard win for us.”
Aly Splecther had a threehit, five-RBI game for the Blue Comets.
“She’s a freshman that will continue to grow for us,” Reilly said. “She’s a little bit anxious. But once she settles in, she has a good bat and is athletic. She’s just got to choose her pitches wisely. She’s learning and she came around when we had to have her.”
Labette County’s Sierra Hill was charged with the loss, allowing 14 hits while striking out one.
Paeton Ellis had four hits and three runs for Chanute while Teichgraeber added a pair of hits.
Chanute’s win over Labette County was its second in a row over the Grizzlies after the Blue Comets’ tournament on Saturday was called due to weather.
“We were disappointed we didn’t get to play on Saturday,” Reilly said. “We were ready to compete. But we’re just trying to chip away one game at a time. We know every league win is one more step. We’re wanting to put ourselves in a good place when it comes to regionals. Our division isn’t forgiving. So we just focus on one game at a time to put ourselves in a good spot. Every win is a good win. It doesn’t have to be pretty.”
In Tuesday’s shutout win over the Vikings, AnnaKate Noonan and Dean combined for a no-hitter over five innings. The pair also combined for seven strikeouts.
Teichgraeber and Noonan also had two hits, while Teichgraeber amassed seven RBIs and a home run.
Chanute is now 7-5 overall on the season.
