Patty Upton’s World Odyssey
CHANUTE – On Sunday, September 22nd at 1 p.m., the Safari Museum will kick off its 2024-2025 Safari Travelogue Series with a captivating presentation by renowned adventurer Patty Upton. Titled Roads End to Roads End – Loren Upton’s World Odyssey, the slide show recounts the incredible journey she and her late husband, Loren, took around the world in a 1966 CJ-5 Jeep named The Sand Ship Discovery. This remarkable overland adventure covered over 56,000 miles across four continents, earning them recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Patty Upton, inspired by childhood dreams of far-off places and legendary explorers, realized her own global odyssey alongside Loren. Their north-south journey stretched from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Punta Arenas, Chile, and from South Africa’s Cape Agulhas to Gamvik, Norway. Patty’s lifelong fascination with travel and adventure shines through in this free-to-the-public presentation, which offers a rare glimpse into the couple’s once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Although Discovery won’t be present at the museum, it will be on display at Big Brutus in West Mineral, Kansas, during Patty’s lecture. However, Patty will provide a full itinerary of the Jeep’s Midwest stops so attendees can catch a personal look at the historic vehicle.
Doors open at 12:45 p.m. in the Johnson Gallery on the museum’s second floor, and the program begins at 1:00 p.m. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear about this extraordinary journey! For more information, contact the museum at 620431-2730, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
