Night owls were treated to a total lunar eclipse on Friday, the first since November 2022 and the last to be seen from Kansas until December 2029. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth blocks sunlight from the moon, casting a shadow over it. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon appears red because the only light reflecting off its surface is the light being refracted, or bent, from the sun by the Earth’s atmosphere.
