MORAN — A Moran man died after being struck by a passing vehicle Wednesday while he was outside of his vehicle on U.S. 54 near Moran.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, on U.S. 54 two miles east of U.S. 59 in Allen County.
A 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driven by James J. Bridger, 22, Gainesville, Texas, was westbound on U.S. 54 and struck Scott R. Welch, 44, Moran, while Welch was standing in the westbound lane of U.S. 54 as the result of a previous collision. Bridger was not injured.
Welch’s previous collision happened at 8:02 p.m. in the same location. Welch was driving a Ford F250 Super Duty pickup eastbound on the highway and was hauling a large bale of hay, which obstructed the visibility of his taillights. A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Raymond L. Streeter, 84, Fort Scott, was eastbound on the highway and rear-ended Welch’s truck. Welch’s truck rotated counter clockwise and overturned, landing on its wheels in the north ditch. The impact ejected Welch, who was not wearing a seat belt, into the westbound lane of U.S. 54. The report said that Welch was seriously injured from the collision.
Streeter had no apparent injuries.
