Chanute takes first in home chess tournament

On Saturday, the Chanute High School chess team dominated its home tournament, taking first place and defeating Valley Center by 4 points.

Seven players medaled, including Jacob Hurtado in second place, Eric Erbe third, Brayden Baker fifth, all with 5 points, Ethan Burnett sixth with 4.5 points, Benjamin Blakesley ninth with 4 points, Logan McMillan 12th with 4 points,and Immerson Vaughan in 20th with 3.5 points.

This tournament was also the first time Cherryvale received a trophy in three years, taking third with 15 points, just half a point below Valley Center.

After the home victory, the team is preparing for the state competition in Emporia, including nine members who will participate in the blitz tournament the day before.
