Richard L. ‘Dick’ Cooper

Richard L. “Dick” Cooper, 87, passed away in Chanute at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.

He was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Severy to Henry and Wilma Cooper. When he was in second grade he moved to Cherryvale, where he graduated from high school in 1955. On May 26, 1957, he married the love of his life, Janice Campbell- Cooper. She was his high school sweetheart.

In 1958, Dick started working at Southwestern Bell Telephone in Parsons. In 1968, Dick was promoted to foreman and moved to Chanute, where he lived until his passing.

Dick and Janice have three sons: Scott Cooper of Raleigh, North Carolina, Curtis Cooper (Grace) of Independence and Kevin Cooper (Kelly) of San Diego, California. They have six grandchildren, Josh and Elijah, Curtis Jr., Richard Jr. and Kaitlyn and Kyria.

Dick was an avid quail hunter and a hunt master on many hunting trips to western Kansas. From a young age, his passion was trapping. He trapped every year until 2021.

Dick was a member of Living Word Assembly in Chanute, and served as an elder for many years. He had a tendency to pick up hitchhikers and lead many of them to the Lord.
