The Chanute Art Gallery is sponsoring two performances by the Wichita Children’s Theatre Touring Troupe on Feb. 10.
At 9:30 a.m., the troupe will present “Elephant & Piggie” for pre-K through second or third grades. The audience is encouraged to get ready for a musical experience, ripped from the pages of Mo Willems’ award-winning children’s books, “Elephant & Piggie.” An elephant named Gerald and a pig named Piggie are the “bestus” (a word Gerald and Piggie made up that means “very best” friends) but Gerald worries that something could go wrong that would end their friendship. Piggie is not worried at all. She’s even happier and more excited than usual. That’s because she and Gerald are invited to a party hosted by the Squirrelles, singing squirrels who love to have a good time. And so, begins a day when anything is possible.
At 1:30 p.m., the troupe will present “School Daze: A Melodrama,” a fast-paced audience participation melodrama written by Tom Frye that should have your young audiences cheering the hero and booing the villain. The new school teacher is perplexed by the children of Smarypants. She’s never dealt with children like Rocky Boulder and the Tinselteena twins. Education will be turned upside down until she wins over her students with good old-fashioned teaching techniques … outsmarting the kids. To make things worse, her home will be foreclosed unless she can pay the mortgage, and it looks like Banker Q Nellyninny is not to be reckoned with.
The performances take place at Chanute Memorial Auditorium.
