YATES CENTER — The Southwind Extension District and Kansas State Research and Extension are planning a heifer replacement program workshop on Thursday, Feb. 20, at the 4-H Community Building in Yates Center.

The meal is served at 6 p.m. and the program follows at 6:30 p.m.

Jason Warner, cow-calf specialist for KSRE, and Jennifer Ifft, KSRE agriculture policy specialist, will discuss heifer development, cost comparisons and livestock risk protection. RSVP by Feb. 17 by calling (620) 365-2242.

Whitetail deer workshop

FORT SCOTT — The Southwind Extension District and Kansas State Research and Extension are offering a whitetail deer biology and management workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Ellis Family Fine Arts Center at Fort Scott Community College, 2108 Horton St., Fort Scott. The meal is served at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m.

Drew Ricketts, KSRE wildlife and outdoor enterprise management specialist, will discuss whitetail deer biology, habitat management, supplemental feeding, population management and understanding disease. RSVP by Feb. 18 by calling (620) 365-2242.

Audubon meeting

The life history of the Harris sparrow will be the program when Southeast Kansas Audubon Society meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Parsons Arboretum, 21st and Briggs in Glenwood Park in Parsons. The presentation will be made by Andrew George, associate professor of biology, Pittsburg State University. George will speak on his research of banding and radio tagging the Harris sparrow, a winter resident of Southeast Kansas. The public is invited.

NCCC board to meet Feb. 12

The Neosho County Communty College Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Student Union Board Room.

Fly flags at halfstaff in Kansas

TOPEKA – Gov. Laura Kelly on Thursday ordered flags throughout Kansas to be flown at half-staff immediately until sundown on Thursday, Feb. 6, in honor of those who lost their lives in a tragic plane crash near Washington, D.C., Wednesday night.
