A Chanute man was injured after the home he was in caught fire and exploded on Monday.
The Chanute Fire Department received a call at 4:14 p.m. Monday about a fire at 628 W. 16th St. The report was a structure fire with an explosion, according to a department release. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office is also investigating the incident. The injured person was treated and transported by ambulance to a hospital. No other occupants were home at the time, according to the release.
Chanute Fire Chief Jeff Mitchell told the Tribune that the explosion is not considered suspicious. The cause and origin are still under investigation.
There is a community drive to provide clothing and other necessities for the family impacted by the fire. An account at Emprise Bank is also accepting donations for Halee Freeman and her daughter and father.
