MUSEUM NEWS

The always popular “Night at the Museum” fundraiser returns Saturday, Feb. 8 from 5-8 pm! Guests can stroll through museum galleries while enjoying fine wines and other beverages along with light hors d’oeuvres offered by our museum trustees, foundation board members, and staff.

Guests will also preview a new special exhibit featuring recent artifact donations and volunteer opportunities. As a special benefit, all participants receive a 10% off coupon for K’s Place that can be used that evening for dinner (please make reservations) or during the next couple months! Our sincere thanks to Kayla and Kevan Lair for their support!

Tickets are $45 for two Explorers or $25 for one Explorer. To purchase tickets online and for more information visit Night25.GiveSmart. com or call the museum at 620-431-2730. Reservations are due Feb. 6. All are welcome to join us!

Why a Valentine’s themed nighttime event? The Safari Museum was named by the History Channel Traveler website as one of the “Top-Ten Historic Sites for Valentine’s Day” nationwide that “capture romance, American-style.” Also, the Kansas City publication “The Pitch” named Chanute and the museum as “Best Romantic Day Trip.” Plus, Johnson photos provided by our museum were used in the “Night at the Museum” movie.

If you have not already done so, I invite you to start or renew your 2025 museum membership or sponsorship. Categories, with a variety of benefits, start at the $40 Individual Member and $100 Family Member.

For details check out the membership section at OsasArkGiftStore.SafariMuseum.com or visit the museum. Your vital contribution helps the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum serve our local community and visitors throughout the year!

Museum admission is free for the rest of this month thanks to underwriting from Orizon Aerostructures. Free admission in February will be sponsored by Community National Bank & Trust. Please take advantage of free museum days and thank these generous supporters.

We need help from the public. Curator Jacque Borgeson Zimmer recently came across 1929 sheet music for the Fox Trot song “That Tantalizing Smile” by The Snowden Sisters. This music features piano and ukulele with alternate tuning and was printed by The Snowden Publishing Co. in Kansas City, MO.

The song is dedicated to Osa Johnson and the cover includes a profile picture of Osa. The sisters were Getrude Snowden Ostrander and Charlotte Snowden Eversole. Interestingly, below their names someone wrote in pencil “Chanute”.

Apart from apparently being friends with Osa, do The Snowden Sisters have a family link to Chanute?

The Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum and Osa’s Ark Museum Store are open Tuesday through Saturday 10-5. For more information call the museum at 620-431-2730, visit SafariMuseum.com, and check us out on Facebook.
