Christopher G. Wood Sr., 88, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
He was born on Jan. 10, 1936, in Iola to Kenneth and Cecilia (Rensing) Wood. Chris lived a life characterized by humility and kindness, leaving behind a profound legacy.
He married Betty Stowell on Sept. 3, 1960, in Chanute at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She preceded him in death in 2023.
Chris dedicated an impressive 37 years of his life to the railroad as a pipefitter, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and friends. He proudly served his country for four years in the United States Air Force, showcasing his commitment to service and duty. After retiring, Chris remained an active and recognizable figure in the community, often seen at Pete’s, where he enjoyed testing his luck with lottery tickets. His passion for fishing and camping gave him much joy and many cherished memories.
Chris is survived by his loving children, Christina Reed of Chanute, Tracy Leal’ Herrera of Kansas City, Kansas, Christopher Woods Jr. of Lenexa and Frederick Wood of Chanute. He will also be remembered fondly by his 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, who were lucky enough to be shaped by his kind and gentle spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, Craig, Kenneth, Herb and David Wood; and a sister, Mary Ann Baker. Their memories remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Wickham Family Funeral Home in Chanute. A prayer service will take place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute with military honors presented by the Chanute Honor Guard.
The family suggests memorials to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and can be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
