CHANUTE — The USD 413 Foundation is $5,000 closer to building a new animal science learning center at Chanute High School, thanks to a grant from Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative’s Concern for Community program.
The grant will support the construction of a facility for live animal learning, including gestation, dissection, and livestock management. It will also provide students with leadership and career readiness opportunities. The district aims to complete the building by fall 2025.
Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative allocated a total of $29,300 in grants this year, with the USD 413 project among six selected. Other funded projects include repairs for the Bourbon County Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels center and cooling fans for the Cherokee County fairgrounds.
Heartland’s Concern for Community program, which began in 2019, uses unclaimed capital credits for grants up to $5,000 for capital improvement projects. Applications for the next round of funding will open in summer 2025.
