Laura Maxine Erickson, 92, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2010 at Overland Park Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Burial on October 18th in Chanute, Ks with Memorial Service at 2:00 pm on October 21st at Prairie Baptist Church, 75th & Roe in Prairie Village, KS. Visitation and reception will follow the service. Memorials in her name may be made to Music Ministry Fund of Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Blvd, PV, KS 66208.

Maxine was born the 4th of 5 children on June 10, 1918 in rural Chanute, KS to parents William and Alka Erickson. Her parents and siblings, Ruby, Gordon, Melvin and Clifford, have all preceded her in death.

Maxine was raised in the rural Chanute area on a farm and attended elementary school in Petrolis, KS, high school in Humboldt and Chanute, KS. She earned a BS at Pittsburg, Kansas State Teacher’s College and MS in Clothing and Related Art from the University of Wisconsin. Maxine taught home economics classes for 43 years. She moved to Kansas City in 1944 where she taught at Paseo High School for 37 years. Maxine retired from teaching in 1983.

Maxine joined Prairie Baptist Church in 1963 where she taught Sunday School, sang in the Chancel Choir, and remained active until the time of her death.

She was also a member of the National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Central Baptist Seminary Auxiliary, Scandinavian Women’s Society, Weaver’s Guild of Greater KC, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Maxine also served as a volunteer at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in KC, MO.

Maxine is survived by nieces and nephews Susan, Barbara, Joanna, Roger, Stephen, Randall, Timothy and Thomas and many long-time friends.
