Marie H. Kyle, 97, a longtime Erie resident, died Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Guest Homes Estates in Erie.

She was born on Dec. 8, 1912 on the family farm south of Galesburg to Thomas and Mary Bolinger Heady. She moved to Erie with her family where she grew up and attended schools. She graduated from Erie High School in 1930. She later attended and received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Pittsburg State Teachers College now Pittsburg State University. She also attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science now Kansas State University, and Northern Arizona State University at Flagstaff.

Her teaching career included several schools in Neosho County and spanned 42 years. She taught at rural schools in Neosho County from 1931 to 1937, at Erie from 1937 to 1952, at Chanute High School from 1952 to 1954, and at Neosho County Community College from 1954 until her retirement in May of 1973.

She and Ted W. Kyle were united in marriage at Independence on June 15, 1935. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1998.

She was a member of the Erie Federated Church where she taught Sunday school classes for several years in the 1930s and 1940s. She was also a member of several professional, fraternal and civic organizations including a life member of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, a life member of the Kansas Women’s Day Club, a former member of the Chanute Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter, a member of the Blue Bag Bridge Club, charter member of the Erie Finesses Bridge Club, a former member of the Erie Chapter No. 136 Order of the Eastern Star, a former member of the Monday Study Club, and a member of the George L. Hendricks Post No. 102 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Erie.

Marie’s survivors include a niece Connie Campbell, and her husband, Robert, Erie; a nephew, Phillip Kyle, Tulsa, Okla.; five great-nieces and nephews, Kimberlee Blaine and her husband, Phil, Gulf Breeze, Fla., Kevin Campbell and his wife, Kathleen, Hartland, Mich., Kerrie Coomes and her husband, Darold, Erie, Phil Kyle, Houston, Texas, Katie Kyle, Austin, Texas; and 10 great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Alfred T. Heady, and her twin sister, Martha Heady.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 14 at the Federated Church in Erie. Burial will follow in the East Hill Cemetery at Erie. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Friends may call the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie after 9 a.m. today.
