He was born May 2, 1915, to Ephraim and Cora Mae Drake Messersmith south of Coffeyville. He graduated from Tyro High School in 1935.
He retired from the Montgomery County Bridge and Road Crew in May 1980, after 34 years of employment.
He married Mildred Comstock Hughes on Sept. 4, 1946, in Independence. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Horn, Humboldt; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Chris Messersmith; six sisters; and a half-brother.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. Burial will follow at Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family will greet friends from 1 to 3 p.m.
Contributions to the Chanute Health Care Center Van Fund or Hospice Care of Kansas may be made in care of Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel.
