Helen Marie Hines, 99, longtime resident of Erie, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008 at Prairie Mission Retirement Village, St. Paul, where she had been cared for the past three years.

She was born May 29, 1909 in the Centerville area, near Erie, to Albert J. and Maude A. Beard Walker. She had lived in the Erie area all her life. She graduated from Erie High School and taught in rural schools. Later she worked in the Register of Deeds office several years and was a homemaker.

On Dec. 8, 1929 she married Durward T. Hines in Fredonia. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in 1999. He prreceded her in death on Feb. 22, 2001.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Erie.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis J. Lytle, Ottawa; a son, John A. Hines and wife, Betsy, Arlington, Texas; daughter-in-law Lloydeen Hines; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Norma Riebe, Erie, Alberta Holding, St. Paul.

Also preceding her in death was a son, Louis R. Hines, in 1997, an infant daughter, Betty Joan Hines, in 1934; five stepgrandchildren; an infant sister, Wilma, in 1914; a brother, Glenn Walker, in 1994; and a son-in-law, Dan Lytle, in 2005.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at First Christian Church in Erie, the Rev. Paul Elliott officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery south of Erie. Friends may call at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday morning.

Memorials are suggested to either the First Christian Church of Erie or Prairie Mission Retirement Village at St. Paul and may be left with the funeral home, Box 182, Erie, KS 66733.
