Mary Ethel Close Moore, 104, of Chanute, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at the Chanute Health Care Center.

Ethel was born Nov. 10, 1908 at the family homestead, Cedardale, southwest of Buffalo. She was the youngest child of her parents, Philip and Alice “Allie” Roney Close. She was preceded in birth by brothers Wilbur, Martin and Earl as well as a sister, Rena.

Ethel grew to adulthood on the family farm, graduated from Buffalo High School, then attended Wichita Business College and went on to work at Utility Garment Company in Wichita. After a few years she returned to Cedardale to care for her ailing father, who shortly after passed away.

Ethel then cared for her mother and married Rex E. Moore on Jan. 3, 1941 in Mt. Vernon, Mo. Ethel and Rex continued living at Cedardale after her mother, Alice, passed away. Rex died in 1973 and Ethel then moved to Chanute which remained her home for the rest of her life.

Ethel belonged to the Wilson County Historical Society and the Grant Avenue Baptist in Chanute.

She is survived by two nieces, Gladys Close Dickson of Albuquerque, N.M., and Donna Close Roth of Casper, Wyo.; one great-niece and three great-nephews; three great-great-nieces, four great-great-nephews; two great-great-great-nephews; and cousins, Mary Lou Conway, Peggy Conway and Kathryn Finley, all of Chanute, and Lawrence Roney of Wichita.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rex, and her siblings.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Maple Grove Cemetery,

Memorials in her name may be made to the Grant Avenue Baptist Church or Cherry Street Youth Center and may be left with the mortuary.
