Leona Laura Hansen Wiltse, 98, passed peacefully on Oct. 25, 2012 in Chanute.
She was born at Morehead on Jan. 9, 1914, the daughter of Albert and Anna Morris Hansen. She graduated from Vilas High School in 1932 where she helped write the Vilas High fight song. This summer she celebrated her 80th class and all school reunion.
Leona was united in marriage to Edwin Dale Wiltse on Sept. 25, 1934.
She loved to play the piano, write poetry, short stories and music. She was an avid gardener and raised beautiful flowers of every color and description. She was a 4-H leader, belonged to ladies extension units and Movers and Shakers. She was also a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, and Harvest House. She loved all of her activities, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She loved writing and telling her grandchildren about life on the farm.
Leona is survived by sons Morris and his wife, Donna, Paul, Ed and his wife, Lisa, and Glen and his wife, Cheryl; daughters, Midge Barley, Mary Krouse, and Jean Shepard and her husband, Larry; 22 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lawrence Hansen and his wife, Pat.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dale, a son, Carl Francis Wiltse, a daughter, Maxine Oakes, grandchildren, Brian Baker and Kelly Shepard, sister Francis Newland, and brothers Ben and Charlie Hansen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Monday at the church.
Memorials in her name may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic School and may be left with the funeral home.
