Lowell O. Head, 85, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at his home in Chanute. Lowell was born July 22, 1927, in Fayetteville, Ark., the son of Charles and Victoria Matthews Head. He attended Monett High School in Missouri

Lowell served his country as a member of the United States Army for two years.

He was united in marriage to Ella Frieda Berg on August 17, 1948, in Cotter, Ark. She preceded him in death in 2009.

Lowell was a machinist for Santa Fe Railroad, and served his entire career as a railroader, retiring in 1991.

Lowell loved hunting, fishing, and was an avid collector of firearms. He enjoyed his trips to Silver Dollar City, and time spent in the Ozarks. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

He is survived by his children, Sheila Ramey and husband, Bob, of Fayetteville, Ark., Orland E. Head, Chanute, Paul E. Head and wife, Alvina, Erie, Michael Head and wife, Lisa, North Kansas City, Mo., LeElla Mussellman and husband, Clay, Chanute, and Dollie Sheldon, Chanute; many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, Lowell was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Charles, two sons, Lowell and Raymond, and a grandson, Tyler Stich.

Funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society. These may be left in the care Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.
