Leslie Richard “Dick” Smith, 85, Pittsburg, formerly of Chanute, died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.

Dick was born in Eureka on May 8, 1927, the son of Harry Leslie and Flossie Faye Sanger Smith. He graduated from Dennis High School in 1945.

He served his country in the United States Navy.

Dick was united in marriage to Ruth Howerton on August 6, 1947 in Manette, Wash. She preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 2003. He married Phyllis Stevenson on Nov. 24, 2004, in Chanute. She preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 2011.

He owned and operated Dick Smith Plumbing.

Dick was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chanute for 50 years. He was also a member of the Chanute Area Amateur Radio Club.

Dick is survived by his children, Connie Clarkson and her husband, John, Arma, Paul Smith and his wife, Sarah, Humboldt, Peggy Myers and her husband, Mike, Chanute; Phyllis’ children, Denise Caughman and her husband, Wayne, Terry Wood, Robin Wood, and Mark Wood; grandchildren, Cobey (Tabby) Clarkson, Mitzi (Chris) Tichenor, Leslie (Angie) Smith, Dwight Richard Smith, Jerrad Myers, and Sarah Myers (Travis Leach); Phyllis’ granddaughters, Kathy (Eric) Doane and Beth (Michael) Staley; 12 great-grandchildren and Phyllis’ sister, Karen Gebhart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth, and his wife Phyllis.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31 at the First United Methodist Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.

Memorials in his name may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Chanute and may be left with the funeral home.
