Joan G. Volk, 85, longtime resident of the rural Erie area, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, July 20, 2012 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
She was born April 11, 1927 at Hill Top, Ark., to Louis M. and Nancy Elizabeth Jones Newberry. When she was 11 years old her family moved to the rural Erie area to farm. She attended country schools and lived in rural Erie most of her life until moving to Prairie Mission.
On March 6, 1949 she married Eldon D. Volk at Erie. Together they farmed for many years. Her husban preceded her in death on Nov, 5, 1993. Joan enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved cooking and baking cookies to be given to friends and family. She attended the First Baptist Church in Erie until her health failed.
Survivivors include two daughters, Janice Pattinson and her husband, Jim, Springfield, Mo., Martha Hizey and her husband, Ray, Erie; grandchildren, Kristen Pattinson, Springfield, Mo., Jason Pattinson and his wife, Brandi, Republic, Mo., Megan Hizey, Carl Junction, Mo., and her fiancé Brian Lamb of Pittsburg, Ryan Hizey, Erie, one great-granddaughter, Alexis Pattison, Republic, Mo., three sisters, Olvie Elmer, Walnut, Elveta Dorris, Erie, Beatrice Gafni, Afula, Israel.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, Emerson Newberry, Arvin Newberry and Eltie Newberry, and four sisters, Dorothy Armer, Juanita Davidson, Louise Hines and Oda Dawson.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 23, at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Galesburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Erie from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday.
