Doris L. Cox, 79, rural Thayer, died Sunday, July 1, 2012 at the Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha. Death followed a lengthy illness.

She was born May 24, 1933, at Urbana, to William and Ethel Gough South. She grew up in the Erie-Galesburg-Thayer areas and graduated from Thayer High School.

On Jan. 2, 1955 she and Virgil L. Cox were married at the Church of the Brethren near Galesburg. After their marriage they lived in the same areas and have lived on the same farm since 1968.

Doris operated the family dairy farm for a number of years. She worked at the Gragg Cabinet Company in Cherryvale for 14 years and for Hi-Lo Industries in Chanute for 12 years, from where she retired. She was a member of the Dennis United Methodist Church. She loved to read and garden and draw.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil L. Cox, of the home; one daughter, Joyce West and her husband, Jim, Neodesha; three sons, Gene Cox and his wife, Susan, Thayer, Dave Cox and his wife, Teresa, Thayer, Randall Cox, Thayer; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon South, Olathe, Larry South, Thayer; two sisters, Wilma Kimrey Parsons, Virginia Koch, Sun City, Calif.; sister-in-law, Juanita Wilkerson Parsons.

She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 6, at the Dennis United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the South Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday.
