John A. Gier, 90, Chanute, died Monday, May 7, 2012 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.
John was born in Crawford County on May 25, 1921, the son of John Asberg and Millie Mae Goff Gier.
John served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in the Central Pacific, Ryukyus, and the Philippines.
He married Norma Joy Johnston in Hepler on Dec. 20, 1945.
He starting working at Ash Grove in 1946 and retired after 38 years in 1984.
He was a member of the American Legion Boerstler-May Post 170 and The First Christian Church in Chanute. John was a hard worker his entire life from a young age when he had to support his mother and sister and later his wife and children.
John is survived by his wife, Norma Joy Gier, Chanute; two children, Harry Gier and wife, Viola, Casper, Wyo., and Sandra Adams, Chanute; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Edith Mae Gier, Chanute.
He was preceded in death by two infant twins, James, Jerald; sons, John, Jr., and Samuel Gier; one daughter, Mira Hosack; and his parents.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 14 at The First Christian Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Walnut Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The First Christian Church.
Memorials in his name may be made to the First Christian Church CWF, The American Heart Association, or The American Diabetes Association and may be left with the funeral home.
