Virginia B. Johnson, 91, longtime rural Erie resident, died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.

She was born Feb. 7, 1920 on a farm north of Pleasanton, to Jon T. and Ethel Ison Slater. She grew up and graduated from high school there..

On Feb. 22, 1939 she and Wayne C. Johnson were married in Iola. After their marriage they briefly lived in Chanute, LaCygne and Osawatomie until 1951, when they moved to a farm in the Centerville Township south of Erie. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1998.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Erie. She loved flowers and spending time outdoors. In earlier years she enjoyed working with her children as a 4-H leader. In later years her main hobby was quilting and she made many quilts.

Survivors include a son, Patrick A. Johnson, Erie, a daughter, Sharon K. Stirewalt, Chanute; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Slater, Galax, Va.; a sister, Betty Secrest, Nevada, Mo.

She was preceded in death by a brother Eugene Slater and a granddaughter Robin Buntin.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 at the First Christian Church of Erie. Burial will be in the East Hill Cemetery

The family will receive friends at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of Erie. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 182, Erie, KS
