Martha Ann Byers, 94, Chanute, died Monday, Feb, 14, 2011 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute.

Martha was born in Chanute on May 27, 1916, the daughter of Frances Asbury and Lillie Lee Johnson Hamilton.

She was united in marriage to Jake Carrol Byers on Jan. 4, 1934 in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death in 1982.

She was a homemaker and worked as a secretary for Byers Concrete and Construction.

She and Jake were co-founders of the Chanute Bit and Spur Saddle Club. She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary.

Martha is survived by a sister, Ruth Cunningham, Oceanside, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Sue Bolin, Troy, Mo.,; numerous nieces and nephews, including Janice VanGotten, Chanute, and Diana Krone, Sterling, who were her primary caregivers for the past several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jake; three sons, Richard Neil Byers, Jake Charles Byers and Frank Dean Byers; a grandson, Jake Carl Byers; a granddaughter, Donna Byers; four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials in her name may be made to Cherry Street Youth Center and may be left with the funeral home.
