Hazel Edna Underwood, 98, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 at the Chanute Healthcare Center at Chanute. She was born on May 27, 1912 at Lynch, Neb., the daughter of James and Edna Hostetter. At age of three the family moved to an 80-acre farm southeast of Blue Mound. Hazel married Cecil Underwood in November 1935 at Platte City, Mo.,and they made their home on a farm near the farm which she had grew up on. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1977.

Hazel worked at the Mound City Nursing Home until she retired at the age of 70. She loved her flowers especially roses and working in her garden, she enjoyed bus trips taking many of them all over the United States and Canada, and was a lifetime member of the eastern star and the Auxiliary. Hazel sold the farm in 1998 and moved to Fort Scott until August of 2010 when she got ill and had to go to the hospital, and then moved to Chanute to the Chanute Healthcare Center until her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Glen and Gerald Hostetter, one sister, Eunice Prez, two sons, Glen and Dannie Underwood.

She is survived by a son, Dennie Underwood and wife, Yvonne, Wichita; a daughter; Deborah Goodner and husband, Kenneth, Chanute; nine grandchildren, Mark and Aaron Underwood of Missouri, Mike Underwood and wife, Vonda, Rose Hill, Shelley Claassen and husband, Bob, Andover, Cathy Eilert, Derby, Craig Goodner and wife, Crystal, Chanute, Kent, Goodner and wife, Annie, Humboldt, and Jeff Goodner and wife, Talisa, Chanute, Tom Goodner and wife, Ragon, Chanute; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews; and one cousin; Shirley Smith, Kansas City, Mo.

Craig, Kent, and Jeff Goodner and Mike and Marc Underwood will be casket bearers at the services, with Aaron Underwood, Kyle Claassen, Brett Underwood, Kevin Claassen, Ryan Tauer, Andrew Powell, Jake Underwood, Dagen Goodner, Garren Goodner, and Dominic Goodner , Aaron Underwood, Jr., honorary casket bearers. Amazing Grace, and Softly and Tenderly were a couple of songs that Hazel enjoyed and will be played at the services.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17 at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, Mound City. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Blue Mound. The family suggests contributions to the Eastern Star. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.coffelschneider.com.
