He was born in Thayer on May 10, 1921, to Paul and Ruth (Bower) Barnhart. He attended Thayer schools.
He married Blanche Dell on Jan. 22, 1944, in Iola.
They were married for 66 years at the time of his death. She survives of the home.
He was a retired farmer.
He was an avid fisherman and coon hunter.
He was a sports enthusiast, coaching Little League Baseball and attending most CHS and NCCC sporting events over the years.
He loved his hometown of Thayer and went to the Horse Pulling matches during Thayer Homecoming week each year. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with people.
His greatest love was being a family man, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Westview Baptist Church and the Elks Lodge #806.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include a daughter, Janice Lewis and her husband Kirk, McLouth; a son, Greg Barnhart and his wife Sharon, Chanute; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Goldie Carpenter, Eastern.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, James E. Barnhart and Martin E. Barnhart; a grandson, John Lewis; two sisters, Erma Davidson and Vera Bartlett; and two brothers, Everett Barnhart and Ray Barnhart.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Westview Baptist Church in Chanute.
The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time.
Memorials in his name may be made to the family and may be left with the funeral home.
