Mary Lou Edmondson, 79, of Chanute, was called home to her Lord on Nov. 15, 2010.

Mary Lou was born on Aug. 8, 1931, to Fritz and Minnie (Miller) Schaffer in Bryan, Texas. She grew up on the F&B Station as one of the Texas A&M University Farm Families.

She graduated from A&M Consolidated in 1948 and received her R.N. from Sam Houston State University in 1951.

She married George Robert Edmondson on Dec. 23, 1954, in Bryan, Texas. They made their home in Chanute. He preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 2001.

She worked for 43 years in her profession, 37 of those years with the State of Kansas.

She loved to travel, visiting many national parks, more than 40 U.S. states, Mexico, Canada and Europe. She was active in her church and volunteered in the community during her retirement years, working at the food pantry and Chamber of Commerce. She also loved to read, crochet and walk.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, John and Rhonda Edmondson, Chanute; daughter Mary Ann Edmondson, Olathe; sons, James Edmondson, Grand Tara, Okla., and Dean Edmondson, Chanute; one grandson, Raymond Austin; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Horace Schaffer of College Station, Texas.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel in Chanute.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church and may be left with the funeral home.

Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
