Chanute baseball back on track with sweep of Indy

The Comets baseball team evened its record for the season at 6-6 with a Friday afternoon sweep of Independence. Chanute picked up the 11-1 and 4-3 victories over Independence on Friday night, in games that had to be moved to Santa Fe Park because of wet conditions at the Comets’ usual Katy Park stadium.

More Comets given chance to play varsity in home tennis tourney
Coach Wayne Woodyard decided to give more Chanute tennis players than usual varsity experience at the tournament that the Comets hosted at the sports complex last Friday afternoon. The local team was able to field two teams at the event, a blue team, consisting of regular varsity players, and a gold team.

8-year-old Ty Leedy two-time national wrestling champ

Chanute Elementary School second grader Ty Leedy is already a five-year veteran of the sport of wrestling, and has now secured a national championship in the sport for his second year in a row. Last weekend, Leedy won at 8 and under, 55 pounds, at the Brute National Wrestling Tournament in Independence, Mo. It was his second year in a row winning this event, which featured young wrestlers from around the country.

Erie golf swings for success in Oswego and Fredonia
The Erie High School varsity golf team traveled to compete in tournaments in both Oswego and Fredonia this week. According to Coach Ronnie Williams, the team had some trouble adapting to the difficult course conditions they faced at these events.

Humboldt softball wins big over Erie
ERIE — The Humboldt softball team extended its winning streak on Tuesday night with two run-rule road victories over the Erie Red Devils. The Lady Cubs won the first game 17-1 and the second game 17-0.

Chanute golf caps off a busy week of SEK tourneys
Last week was a busy one for the Chanute golf team, as the Comets participated in two SEK meets. Last Tuesday, Chanute golfers traveled to Pittsburg’s Crestwood Country Club, where the team received a combined score of 388. Tournament winners Labette County shot a 320 on the course.

OCRS cancels Friday’s sprint car appearance at Humboldt
Due to the high percentage of unfavorable weather forecasted for the Humboldt area this week, officials of the Oil Capital Racing Series and the Humboldt Speedway have cancelled the sprint car portion of the program originally scheduled for this Friday night. Humboldt Speedway has not cancelled their regular division of cars scheduled to race at this time. A make-up date is being considered for later in the season for the OCRS sprint cars.

NCCC hires new women’s basketball coach
NCCC has named JJ Davis the head women’s basketball coach at Neosho County Community College, replacing Kelley Newton, who resigned from the position at the end of last season.

The first-year head coach of Chanute’s baseball team Josh Messer thought that he would use the Comets’ Tuesday night games against a non-league opponent to try out some new starting pitchers that don’t usually see much time on the mound.
