CCA boys win home opener
The Chanute Christian Academy boys basketball team opened home play against Independence Bible on Tuesday night. The boys came out playing hard and executing their offense and were able to take a lead of 22-8 in the 1st period. According to Coach Dave Yarnell, Independence was doing a good job going to the boards and getting in the passing lanes, but just did not have the offense to keep up.

Altoona-Midway teams fall to Flinthills
Both Altoona-Midway basketball squads came up short in home match-ups against Flinthills on Tuesday night.
The Jets went into the fourth quarter with a seven-point lead, but were outscored 24-12 in this span. This propelled Flinthills to beat the Altoona-Midway boys 66-61.

Chanute girls start SEK play with big win

Chanute’s Girls Basketball Coach Dustin Fox is excited about this year and thinks that his Comets’ team really has a good chance to win a league title. Humboldt boys beat Erie for tourney victory
The Humboldt boys basketball wrapped up its home tournament with a 51-17 win over the Erie boys team on Friday night. The Cubs dominated the match-up from the beginning, developing a 32-9 lead at the half.
Senior Noah Thornbrugh led the team in scoring in this match-up with 11 points, while Blake Crawford, Tanner McNutt, and Trey Johnson all scored eight points for the Cubs.

Two seniors that were a key part of Chanute’s girls basketball team and one senior from the boys team were honored for their performances during the season-opening tournament last week in Burlington. EUDORA — Eight Chanute wrestlers grappled their way on to the championship bracket at the Eudora tournament this weekend and sophomores Alex Son and Adam Cole both secured first place wins at the annual event. Son quickly won by fall over a wrestler from Lawrence to snatch a win in 170, while Cole earned his victory over a foe Effingham in 126.

Howell, three other Comets honored by All-State roster
Chanute senior Cody Howell was selected to the first team on defense in the 2012 4A All-State football rosters that were released this week by the Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper. Howell, a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker helped lead the Comets to be one of the most effective defensive teams in the 4A class. Lady Panthers’ effort stifled by poor shooting

Players on the NCCC Lady Panthers basketball team only hit 22 percent of the shots they took on Monday night, making just 17 out of 64.
“You can’t do that and win a game,” Coach Kelley Newton said.

Eighth grade team struggles through tough week
The eighth grade basketball teams were very active last week, traveling to Pittsburg, Independence and Burlington, to face some tough competition. The B team brought its record to 5-1 by beating Pittsburg 24-22 and Independence 23-21. The A team struggled a bit. falling 32-16 to Pittsburg and 28-18 to Indy. The Humboldt boys started their season with a 53-48 road victory over Eureka on Friday night.
The match-up started out close knits, but the Cubs outscored their opponents in both the second and fourth quarters to earn the five-point victory.

It was a busy week for the 7th grade girls basketball teams from Royster.
