Racing at Humboldt starts this weekend
The Humboldt Speedway will be starting its racing season this weekend with the 8th annual Spring Fling at the Bullring.
A canceled event at the Valley Speedway has added an extra night to this USMTS Special, with racing action on both Friday and Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. The speedway will be running complete shows of USRA Modifieds, B-Mods and Pure Stock on both nights.

Loss to Butler ends NCCC men’s season
EL DORADO — The NCCC men’s basketball team ended its season on Saturday with a 90-67 loss to Butler County, in a first round Region VI playoff game. This was the third time this season that the Panthers would lose to the Grizzlies in Saturday night’s first round Region VI playoff game.

Cubs win 2OT thriller in semis
In its undefeated season, the Humboldt Cubs team hasn’t had a lot of pressure free throw shooting and that showed Friday night. But despite missing six charities in a row in the first overtime, Cub fans breathed a big sigh of relief at the end of the 74-70 double overtime win over Tri-Valley League foe Burlington.

Struggles led NCCC sophomore wrestler Barnes to championship glory

Last, weekend, NCCC sophomore wrestler Le’Roy Barnes won a National Championship at 133 at the NJCAA in Des Moines. His victory came in a comeback win by fall over Mizam Tamaradze of Springfield Technical Community College

St. Paul powers past Flinthills
UDALL — The St. Paul Indians boys basketball team dispatched Flinthills 57-28 Thursday in Class 1A basketball sub-state action.
Both the boys and girls teams will play this afternoon in Udall.
St. Paul held just a 15-14 lead after one quarter, but held Flinthills scoreless to take a 24-14 halftime advantage. The Indians then blitzed their foe 25-4 in the third period to take a commanding 49-18 advantage.

Humboldt boys’ winning streak extends into first game of sub-state

HUMBOLDT — According to Head Coach Dave Taylor, he and the players on the Humboldt boys basketball team don’t spend much time discussing the Cubs’ perfect record so far this year.
“Everybody else talks about it,” Taylor said.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Following up a freshman year that ended with a 3rd place finish at the 2012 NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament, NCCC sophomore Le’Roy Barnes improved this season by winning the 2013 National Championship on Saturday.

Both the St. Paul boys and girls basketball teams scored victories in their final regular season games at Colony-Crest on Saturday night.
The girls team routed Crest 60-16, benefiting from a 17-point performance from Jordyn Tuck.

Winter weather causing adjustments in sports schedules
Winter weather in the area has caused some juggling of sports schedules.
At press-time, the sub-state basketball games featuring the Chanute Blue Comets boys and girls basketball teams are tentatively scheduled to be played later today, with the boys game starting at 4:30 p.m. in El Dorado, and the girls team hosting Parsons starting at 7 p.m. It is not yet known how this schedule will be affected by the snow that fell in this area yesterday....

NCCC women’s comeback against Johnson County falls short
The number one ranked Johnson County Cavaliers beat Neosho County by 34 points on Jan. 26 in Chanute, but Saturday afternoon’s meeting between the two squads was a much different story. The Humboldt Cubs boys basketball completed its perfect regular season on Tuesday night, with a 70-35 victory over Cherryvale on Tuesday night. The big win brings Humboldt’s record to 20-0.
